Five by Five

According to Wikepedia, five by five means "a signal that has excellent strength and perfect clarity". It was originally used for stations to determine how their signal was coming through. I picked up on the saying while watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer on TV. Faith uses the phrase to mean that everything is good.

Who doesn't want their message to get through as clearly as possible? Wouldn't life be that much easier if we all communicated with "excellent strength and perfect clarity"? Of course, where would that leave the stories that we tell? Without conflict, who cares? So although I hope that my communications are always clear and never misunderstood (ha, like that'll happen), I also hope that my characters never really say what they mean, at least not until the last few pages of their books.
