Five by Five

According to Wikepedia, five by five means "a signal that has excellent strength and perfect clarity". It was originally used for stations to determine how their signal was coming through. I picked up on the saying while watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer on TV. Faith uses the phrase to mean that everything is good.

Who doesn't want their message to get through as clearly as possible? Wouldn't life be that much easier if we all communicated with "excellent strength and perfect clarity"? Of course, where would that leave the stories that we tell? Without conflict, who cares? So although I hope that my communications are always clear and never misunderstood (ha, like that'll happen), I also hope that my characters never really say what they mean, at least not until the last few pages of their books.

Reasons for Blogging

Why blog? I am, after all, technologically mediocre. I've never mistaken the CD drive for a cup holder on my computer, but I'm forever in awe of people who manage to perform a million tasks on their computers.

My biggest reason for blogging is that I recently decided to embark on a new career. One year ago I traded in physical therapy for writing. I have a wonderful husband who is willing to support me as I work to actually make money at this new gig. Thanks, babe! I've also aspirations to some day be a ski bum, if only for one winter. I also secretly want to be a race car driver. I went to race car driving school this past summer at Road Atlanta, and, oh, it was soooo fun!

And what better way to find adoring fans than to publish a blog? I primarily write science fiction and fantasy, but I've also dabbled a bit with contemporary fiction. I haven't published anything yet, but each day is one day closer to that first paycheck.

And if this whole writing, physical therapy, ski bum, race car driver thing doesn't work out - well, there's always world domination.
